Business Days

Public holidays and working days, country by country

Add or subtract business days

Find the date a given number of working days before or after a start date. Weekends and nationwide public holidays are skipped. Enter a negative number to count backwards from a deadline.

How the count runs

The start date is day zero and is never counted. Counting moves one calendar day at a time, and a day is only credited when it is neither a weekend nor a nationwide public holiday. Ten working days after a Friday is therefore the Friday a fortnight later, assuming no holiday intervenes.

Counting backwards works the same way in reverse, which is the calculation to use when a filing or delivery deadline is fixed and you need the date work has to begin.

A caution on notice periods

Statutory notice periods, court deadlines and payment terms each define their own counting rules, and those rules differ on whether the first day counts, whether the deadline can land on a non working day, and which calendar governs when parties sit in different countries. This tool implements the ordinary working day convention. Where a deadline carries legal weight, check the governing text rather than relying on a general purpose calculator.
