Reading these figures
The working day count treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, which is the standard working week in Spain. Only nationwide holidays are deducted; a date observed in one region alone still counts as a working day here, because a national figure that moved with regional calendars would describe nobody accurately.
3 of this year's public holidays fall on a weekend and therefore add no time away from work: National Day of Spain (12 Oct), All Saints Day (1 Nov), Constitution Day (6 Dec). Whether these are compensated with a substitute day depends on national rules rather than on the calendar, so confirm before planning around them.
The longest working month is July at 23 days; the shortest is November at 20. That spread of 3 days matters for anything billed or accrued monthly, which is why payroll and capacity plans that assume an even year drift by the end of it. The thinnest quarter is Q1, carrying 62 working days across January, February, March.
Against the 204 countries covered here for 2025, Spain's 10 nationwide holidays put it below the median of 12, around the 25th percentile. The range across all countries this year runs from 3 to 48.
The holidays produce 4 breaks of three consecutive non-working days or more. The longest runs 3 days, from 4 January 2025 to 6 January 2025, built around Epiphany. A further 2 working days are stranded between a holiday and a weekend, where one day of leave buys a break of four days or more. The full breakdown is here.
Notes on Spain
The Spanish calendar is built in three layers. A national list is set centrally, the autonomous
communities may substitute some of those dates for their own, and each municipality adds two
local days. No worker receives more than fourteen public holidays in a year, but which fourteen
depends on both the region and the town, so two colleagues in the same company can be off on
different days.
This page counts the national layer only. Expect the real figure in any given office to differ
by a handful of days, and expect the local days in particular to be invisible from outside:
they are frequently patron saint festivals that appear on no national list.
The other Spanish habit worth planning around is the puente. When a holiday falls on a Tuesday
or a Thursday, the intervening Monday or Friday is very widely taken as leave, and in some
sectors it is effectively assumed. Those days are not holidays and are not deducted here, but a
capacity plan that ignores them will be optimistic.
