Reading these figures
The working day count treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, which is the standard working week in Austria. Only nationwide holidays are deducted; a date observed in one region alone still counts as a working day here, because a national figure that moved with regional calendars would describe nobody accurately.
6 of this year's public holidays fall on a weekend and therefore add no time away from work: Easter Sunday (28 Mar), National Holiday (1 May), Pentecost (16 May), Assumption Day (15 Aug), Christmas Day (25 Dec), St. Stephen's Day (26 Dec). Whether these are compensated with a substitute day depends on national rules rather than on the calendar, so confirm before planning around them.
The longest working month is March at 22 days; the shortest is May at 18. That spread of 4 days matters for anything billed or accrued monthly, which is why payroll and capacity plans that assume an even year drift by the end of it. The thinnest quarter is Q1, carrying 61 working days across January, February, March.

Notes on Austria
Austria's calendar changed in a way that is easy to miss. Good Friday used to be a public holiday
for members of certain Protestant churches only. After a European Court of Justice ruling in 2019
found that arrangement discriminatory, it was removed as a general holiday and replaced with a
personal holiday that any employee may claim once a year on a date of their choosing. Sources
written before 2019 still list Good Friday, and they are wrong.
8 December, the Immaculate Conception, is a public holiday but retail is permitted to open,
which makes it a working day for a substantial part of the workforce even though it counts as a
holiday here.
