Reading these figures

The working day count treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, which is the standard working week in Latvia. Only nationwide holidays are deducted; a date observed in one region alone still counts as a working day here, because a national figure that moved with regional calendars would describe nobody accurately.

20 of this year's public holidays fall on a weekend and therefore add no time away from work: World Non-Governmental Organization Day (27 Feb), Easter Sunday (28 Mar), Day of the Convocation of the Constitutional Assembly of the Republic of Latvia (1 May), Labour Day (1 May), Day of the Defeat of Nazism and Commemoration Day of Victims of World War II (8 May), Europe Day (9 May), Mother's Day (9 May), International Day of the Family (15 May), Pentecost (16 May), Medical Worker Day (20 Jun), Commemoration Day of Genocide Against the Jews (4 Jul), Day of the Sea Festival (10 Jul), Day of the Passing of the Constitutional Law on the Status of the Republic of Latvia as a State (21 Aug), Father's Day (12 Sep), Border Guards Day (7 Nov), Remembrance Day of the Tragedy of 21 November 2013 (21 Nov), Commemoration Day of Victims of Genocide Against the Latvian People By the Totalitarian Communist Regime (5 Dec), Police Day (5 Dec), Christmas Day (25 Dec), Second day of Christmas (26 Dec). Whether these are compensated with a substitute day depends on national rules rather than on the calendar, so confirm before planning around them.

The longest working month is July at 22 days; the shortest is June at 16. That spread of 6 days matters for anything billed or accrued monthly, which is why payroll and capacity plans that assume an even year drift by the end of it. The thinnest quarter is Q1, carrying 55 working days across January, February, March.

Compared with 2026, which held 230 working days, 2027 is 2 working days longer. Where a target is carried over from one year to the next unchanged, that difference is absorbed silently unless someone accounts for it.

Against the 204 countries covered here for 2027, Latvia's 49 nationwide holidays put it above the median of 12, around the 100th percentile. The range across all countries this year runs from 3 to 49.

The holidays produce 10 breaks of three consecutive non-working days or more. The longest runs 5 days, from 25 March 2027 to 29 March 2027, built around Commemoration Day of Victims of Communist Terror and Good Friday and Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. A further 11 working days are stranded between a holiday and a weekend, where one day of leave buys a break of four days or more. The full breakdown is here.

10 of this year's holidays sit on a different calendar date than in 2026: Commemoration Day of Victims of Communist Terror, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, Mother's Day, Pentecost and others. Dates that move cannot be carried forward from last year's planning spreadsheet, which is the most common way a holiday is missed.
