Reading these figures
The working day count treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend, which is the standard working week in Latvia. Only nationwide holidays are deducted; a date observed in one region alone still counts as a working day here, because a national figure that moved with regional calendars would describe nobody accurately.
17 of this year's public holidays fall on a weekend and therefore add no time away from work: International Women's Day (8 Mar), Easter Sunday (5 Apr), Europe Day (9 May), Mother's Day (10 May), Firefighter and Rescuer Day (17 May), Pentecost (24 May), Commemoration Day of Victims of Communist Terror (14 Jun), Medical Worker Day (21 Jun), Commemoration Day of Genocide Against the Jews (4 Jul), Day of the Sea Festival (11 Jul), Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism (23 Aug), Father's Day (13 Sep), Border Guards Day (7 Nov), Remembrance Day of the Tragedy of 21 November 2013 (21 Nov), Police Day (5 Dec), Commemoration Day of Victims of Genocide Against the Latvian People By the Totalitarian Communist Regime (6 Dec), Second day of Christmas (26 Dec). Whether these are compensated with a substitute day depends on national rules rather than on the calendar, so confirm before planning around them.
The longest working month is July at 23 days; the shortest is June at 17. That spread of 6 days matters for anything billed or accrued monthly, which is why payroll and capacity plans that assume an even year drift by the end of it. The thinnest quarter is Q2, carrying 53 working days across April, May, June.
Compared with 2025, which held 231 working days, 2026 is 1 working day shorter. Where a target is carried over from one year to the next unchanged, that difference is absorbed silently unless someone accounts for it.
Against the 204 countries covered here for 2026, Latvia's 49 nationwide holidays put it above the median of 12, around the 100th percentile. The range across all countries this year runs from 3 to 49.
The holidays produce 12 breaks of three consecutive non-working days or more. The longest runs 5 days, from 20 June 2026 to 24 June 2026, built around Medical Worker Day and Heroes' Commemoration Day (Anniversary of the Battle of Cēsis) and Līgo Day and Jāņi Day. A further 8 working days are stranded between a holiday and a weekend, where one day of leave buys a break of four days or more. The full breakdown is here.
11 of this year's holidays sit on a different calendar date than in 2025: Commemoration Day of Victims of Communist Terror, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, Day of the Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia, Mother's Day and others. Dates that move cannot be carried forward from last year's planning spreadsheet, which is the most common way a holiday is missed.
